Clethra acuminata, commonly known as the mountain sweet pepperbush or cinnamon clethra, is a deciduous shrub/small tree native to the southeastern United States. It typically grows in moist woodlands, along stream banks, and in mountainous regions, where it adds a touch of beauty and fragrance to its surroundings.

This shrub is known for its elegant appearance, reaching heights of up to 12 feet with a rounded, spreading habit. Its glossy, dark green leaves turn a vibrant yellow in the fall, creating a striking contrast against the brownish-gray bark of older stems.

During mid to late summer, Clethra acuminata produces dense spikes of small, fragrant white flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The flowers have a delicate, sweet fragrance reminiscent of cinnamon, hence its common name "cinnamon clethra."

In landscaping, Clethra acuminata is valued for its ornamental features, adaptability to various soil types, and its ability to thrive in both sun and shade, although it prefers partial shade in its natural habitat.

Overall, Clethra acuminata is a charming addition to woodland gardens, native plant landscapes, and naturalized areas, providing both visual appeal and ecological benefits throughout the seasons. Hardy in zones 5-8.
