Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is a striking native perennial prized for its tall, airy white flower spikes and bold, deeply cut foliage. Blooming in late summer, its fragrant bottlebrush flowers rise above lush green leaves, adding height and elegance to shade gardens and woodland borders. This hardy deer-resistant plant thrives in partial to full shade and moist, but well-drained soil. Ideal for pollinator gardens, and is a host plant for spring azure, holly blue, and Appalacian azure butterflies/larvae. Actaea racemosa is also valued as a traditional herbal remedy. Cold-hardy and low maintenance, black cohosh is perfect for naturalized plantings and perennial shade garden designs.
