This is the straight species Carolina rhododendron (Rhododendron carolinianum). This small, mound-shaped, broadleaf evergreen shrub reaches 3-6 ft. tall, with picturesque, ascending branches and smooth, thick, dark-green foliage that turns purplish in winter. Broad, funnel-shaped flowers occur in large, terminal clusters. Flowers bloom in spring and range from white to pink.
Like all rhododendrons, Carolina rhododendron enjoys acidic, well-drained soils and dislikes wet feet. It benefits from a good mulching over the roots to keep the soil cool.
