This is the white flowered form of the straight species Carolina rhododendron (Rhododendron carolinianaum). Clusters of white flowers with a yellow blotch adorn the plant in early spring and are of special value to bumble bees.
This small, mound-shaped, broadleaf evergreen shrub reaches a height and width of 4-6 ft. It has picturesque, ascending branches and smooth, thick, dark-green leaves that turn purplish in winter.
Like all rhododendrons, Carolina rhododendron enjoys acidic soils and dislikes wet feet. It benefits from a good mulching over the roots to keep the soil cool.
