Rhododendron canescens, commonly known as the mountain azalea or piedmont azalea, is a deciduous shrub native to the southeastern United States. This plant is celebrated for its beautiful floral display and pleasant fragrance, which make it a standout choice for gardens and naturalized landscapes.

Mountain Azalea features striking clusters of funnel-shaped flowers that bloom in late spring (April-May). The flowers are typically pale pink to soft white with subtle pink veins, creating a delicate and eye-catching contrast. Each flower cluster is made up of 5 to 15 blooms, adding to the plant's overall visual impact.

This shrub grows to a height of 6 to 15 feet and can spread 6 to 12 feet wide. It has a rounded, open form and is covered with dark green, elliptic leaves that turn a rich reddish-brown in the fall before dropping.

Rhododendron canescens is hardy in zones 5 to 9. The mountain azalea prefers well-drained, acidic soils and thrives in partial shade to part sun conditions.

The fragrant, nectar-rich flowers of Rhododendron canescens attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its blooms provide an important food source for these beneficial insects and birds, contributing to a healthy and biodiverse garden ecosystem.
