Viburnum cassinoides, commonly known as wild raisin or witherod viburnum, is a hardy native shrub prized for multi-season interest and wildlife value. In late spring, this North American native produces flat-top clusters of creamy white flowers that attract pollinators. The blooms are followed by showy berries that transition from green to pink, red, blue, and finally deep purple-black in the fall, often displaying multiple colors at once. Birds eagerly feed on the fruit, making it an excellent wildlife garden shrub. Glossy green foliage turns attractive shades of yellow, orange, and red in fall. Berries often remain on the plant after leaves fall, providing winter interest.
Witherod viburnum thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates moist to average soils, making it ideal for native plant gardens, naturalized landscapes, rain gardens, and woodland edges. The shrub has an oval shape and can be used for hedges. It's also a natural fit for areas around ponds but is incredibly versatile. Viburnum cassinoides is a great choice for gardeners looking for native shrubs, pollinator plants, bird-friendly landscaping, and four-season ornamental interest.
