Yellow Buckeye, Aesculus flava

Aesculus flava, commonly called yellow buckeye, is a medium to large deciduous tree that grows 50-75’ tall. It is the largest of the buckeyes that are native to the U. S. and may be used as an ornamental shade tree. Yellow buckeye prefers full to partial sun and rich, well-drained soils. It grows particularly well along stream banks. It is known for its large upright yellow flowers, palm-shaped leaves, and distinctive fruit. According to folklore, the buckeye or nuts that fall from the tree resemble the eye of a deer buck, and carrying one brings good luck!
